This last year was a hospital-heavy one for my family. Between pregnancy, Nathan’s birth and subsequent NICU stay, his ongoing vision problems, and then my appendectomy . . . I’ve never had such a profound sense of gratitude for our health insurance!
Surgeries aside, though, even all the little things add up throughout the year. I’m keen on preventative health measures (immunizations and vitamins and stuff) and adding a baby doubles the number of visits we need to get those taken care of! Then there are the medications I take, and on top of THOSE, Nathan hasn’t done well when we’ve tried to wean him off of his anti-reflux meds, so we have to get THAT filled by a specialist each month, too!
We’re lucky enough right now to have great health insurance through J’s work, but there were a lot of times when I was single that I didn’t have health insurance. When I went back to school I was uninsured, which was SUPER scary! I take thyroid medication every day, and trying to figure out how to get a prescription while on COBRA was difficult, and then trying to figure out where to go to get it filled and how I would pay for all of those costs . . . I never had such a profound sense of gratitude for my parents generosity during that time
It was an expensive time for me.
I wish I’d been aware of programs like the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club during that time. Through them, you can get discounts on flu shots, medications (all generics AND over 8,000 name brands!) nebulizer or diabetic supplies, and even some pet medications! (They also offer bonuses on Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services, which is just icing on the cake!) The best part is that it’s affordable (even if you’re single, deep in debt, and have just quit work in order to go back to school!)
Right now, Walgreens is offering a discount on their annual membership – $5 for an individual, $10 for a family (which includes your spouse, dependents 22 years and younger, and PETS! Even traditional insurance won’t help you if your PET gets sick!) Even WITH our current health insurance, I’m thinking of signing up for their plan. For that amount of money, what is there to lose?
