Day 1 Update!

by Carolyn on February 16, 2010

So today was a holiday for me, and I had big plans on what I was going to do ;) Of COURSE, I didn’t get all of it done, but I was able to get at least one blog goal accomplished, and that was to think about what I wanted to post about (other than my everyday exploits, of course!) Eventually I want to have separate pages for each content category, but until I figure out how to do that, it’ll all just be jumbled together within the blog, and people can use the labels/tags to search for items if they want :)

  • Book Reviews – I have to write them for BookSneeze anyhow, so that will be a part of this blog (because who doesn’t want free books in exchange for a few minutes of work?)
  • Recipe Reviews – One of the ways J and I talked about saving money is to cook more and eat pre-made meals less. We’re actually already pretty good about that, but J does use some of his “fun” money each week to go to lunch every day. If we make his lunches at home, he can use less “fun” money per week, and we can put those extra few dollars towards something else! That means we’ll need to start branching out, recipe wise, since we’ll be cooking two meals per day instead of one. So I figure I’ll catalog my adventures in new recipes and how they come out!
  • Product Reviews (?) – I’m not sure if this one will warrant it’s own page, but I think it’s something I’ll end up talking about anyhow, so I might as well plan to incorporate it! I love gadgets and “stuff,” and I like sharing my opinions, so even if it’s not a part of a themed blog, I’m sure I’ll end up giving my opinions on stuff I buy :)

For now, that’s all I have planned. When I get pregnant someday, I’m sure there will be other sections I can add, and the same for when I actually have kids, but right now all I can talk about are the things I’m currently doing: thinking, planning, reading, and cooking ;)

I also spent some time today looking into advertisement and affiliate marketing, so bear (bare? neither of those options looks right!) with me while I work out the kinks and try to figure out how to best utilize my options for the best results while being as least annoying as possible :) Feel free to let me know how I’m doing!

So, we rarely eat out. It is a totally odd phenom too as I work in a food industry and essentially spend all day in a kitchen. One might think I was actually interested in eating in these places. Well, I am but considering their price structure does not fit my price structure – we compromise. I ask the chefs about a meal I’m interested in and then do it myself at home.
Cooking, albeit never as easy, is always more satisfying if done by you. Whatever you do just tastes better! Even if it sucks.
Here are some tips we use to totally avoid eating out:
    1. make extra dinner and eat that extra dinner the next day for lunch (duh).
    2. Every trip to the grocery store buy one thing to try that neither of you has tried before. We find that we make the same meals on a weekly basis and that gets stale which prompts the inevitable “let’s go out to dinner…”conversation. If you’re forced to try something new you’ll add that to your list of potential meals in a week. If you have chard or kale or a pound of lentils, you’ll likely have to figure out how to use those items in a new and creative way. The most important step is actually remembering to get that new ingredient.
    3. create your own cook book with recipes that you like. This will grow and eventually create enough variety that choices will abound making dinner decisions more fruitful.
    4. Learn basics of cooking and especially learn how to use non-processed pieces of meat. That is, learn how to use a fryer chicken instead of buying just chicken breasts. A fryer chicken is easily 4 servings for 3 bucks whereas chicken is four servings for 12 bucks.
4a. Knowing basic cooking skill also will make your food better. Know that using that fryer chicken to make easy (and essentially free) chicken stock is a key bit of knowledge that makes that chicken go further. Now that 4 servings turns into 8 as you can make chicken stock which is easy to turn into simple soups.
I’m really passionate about food and find that cooking at home, even when done poorly, is really easy.
You also might check out websites like couponsense if you have time during your week. We have friends who get absurd amounts of food for very cheap. We liked the idea but we’re only two people (we just can’t go through 12 boxes of cereal in a reasonable amount of time) and Christie didn’t have the time to accomplish enough however if you can it is totally worth it and a huge savings on your grocery bill.
